Application Essay Consulting

No matter their story, every student has a unique point of view. I meet the writer where they are, empowering them through relaxed conversation about themselves and the writing. Together we uncover their compelling story, establishing their authority as writers who own their voice on the page.
The writing process itself clarifies awareness and solidifies understanding of the writer's goals.
It is a privilege to work with writers at this important juncture in their lives, and to help them find a future college, program, grant, or profession where they feel celebrated.

Editorial Work

I collaborate with the writer to help them realize their vision for all their written work. I help with all types of writing and at all points in the writing process from developmental editing to that defining line break in a poem.

Writing

My literary fiction reviews appear in American Book Review, and my creative nonfiction in the Rubbertop Review. My art column and features appear in The Mississippi Free Press under the name Emily P. Resmer.  My poem, The Freedom of No Options won a University of Akron English Departmental Prize in 2017.

I am currently working on an essay collection on voice. I am also writing a Campus Women's Fiction/ Romance novel about professors in love and in conflict with the corporatization of academia.

Gratefully Acknowledged

My unpublished essay collection explores themes familiar to the sandwich generation: aging and dying parents, kids off to college, and childhood memories that assume new meaning in context. Eating and preparing food and tea recur as themes in the collection, just as they do in my daily life.

Tea Pot
Notebook and Pen

A work of art is something produced by a person, but is not that person- it is of her, but it is not her. It's a reach, really-the artist is trying to inhabit, temporarily, a more compact, distilled, efficient, wittier, more true-seeing, precise version of herself-one that she can't replicate in so called 'real' life, no matter how hard she tries. That's why she writes: to try and briefly be more who she truly is.
